Purpose:

The purpose of the BCRO web site is to provide a list of all the retirement residences offered by both Government and Private organizations that provide accomodations and/or health care assistance to retired seniors living in British Columbia (B.C.) Canada

IMPORTANT NOTE: One of the most important consideration for seniors who are investigating the numerous retirement options is - does this retirement option include appropriate health care support and services? To assist with this specific information research please note that:

    - all boxes with a background color of blue, DO provide health care support information.

    - all boxes with a background color of yellow, DO NOT provide health care support information.




BC RETIREMENT LIVING OPTIONS:

There are four main types of seniors retirement living options offered in BC as follows:

Refers to the ability of privately owned companies operating either for profit or non-profit to provide support for seniors health, financial and accommodation issues.

BC Government Senior Services:

The Government of B.C. is committed to promoting healthy, active aging, and providing information and resources about the services seniors and their families and caregivers need to make good decisions about their health, care, and overall well-being. There are two separate Government organizations that provide seniors with help and information services concerning various retirement options, housing options and services in BC as follows.

a) SeniorsBC (web site):
The SeniorsBC website provides information on programs and services for seniors offered by the B.C. and federal governments and non-profit organizations. The website includes information on health, finances, benefits, housing, transportation, tips for healthy living and other topics of importance to seniors. This is a place for all older adults in the province to find resources for planning and living a healthy and active life as they age. Senior's families and caregivers will also find great information here as well.

b) The BC Seniors' Guide (web site):
The BC Seniors' Guide is a book-style compilation of information and resources to help seniors plan for and live a healthy lifestyle as they age. It includes information on provincial and federal programs, with sections on benefits, health, lifestyle, housing, transportation, finances, safety and security, and other services.

BC Housing:
a) Seniors Supportive Housing program:

This program provides housing and support services to older adults, seniors and people with disabilities. The Program assists low-income British Columbians who are 55 years of age or older, and people of any age who have a disability or diminished ability. The Program modified apartment units are designed for people who can live independently with some assistance, but who are not eligible for assisted living or a greater level of care.

b) Shelter Aid For Elderly Renters (SAFER):

The Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program helps make rents affordable for BC seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents who are age 60 or over.

Office of the Seniors Advocate BC:

The Office of the Seniors Advocate is an independent office of the B.C. provincial government acting in the interest of seniors and their caregivers. The Office monitors and analyzes seniors services and issues in B.C., and makes recommendations to government and service providers to address systemic issues. The services which the Office monitors are in five key areas: health care, housing, income supports, community supports and transportation. Also, a comprehensive continuum of health care services is required to provide optimal care and support for seniors in B.C., including primary health care, specialist care, chronic disease management programs, hospital care, home care, long-term care and palliative care.

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) - Services for Seniors:

VCH works in partnership with Providence Health Care in Vancouver to take patients referred from across the province. Together, they provide 46 percent of all inpatient specialized care for British Columbia. If you find that your daily care needs and health issues make it difficult to continue living in your home, it may be time for you to look at a safer alternative. The decision to move into residential care is very personal. It should be made after carefully reviewing your situation, your needs and your options.

There are six main VCH service for seniors options to consider as follows:

Find a VCH Seniors Health Care Location:

VCH operates more than 120 locations, including hospitals, urgent and primary care centres and other locations across the Coastal, Richmond and Vancouver areas of B.C.

How to access BC Home and Community Care options:

If you are interested in receiving home and community health care services you can contact the Home and Community Care Office in your health authority ( e.g. VCH ) to request an assessment for services. Health care professionals, such as a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or social worker, can also make a referral on your behalf.

If you are in hospital and believe you will need assistance when you return home, you can ask your doctor, nurse or social worker to contact the home and community care office of your local health authority to determine your eligibility and if appropriate, arrange for services when you return home.
